Jesus in Islam: [Taken from a brochure published by the Islamic Cultural Center in Tempe, AZ, USA]
Behold! the angles said: "Oh Mary! Give tidings of a
word from Him: his name will be Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah. (Qur'an 3:45)
Muslims respect and honor Jesus (peace be upon him) as one of the greatest prophets, and await his second coming as described in the Qur'an. The Qur'an confirms the virgin birth of Jesus as well as his ability to perform miracles (Qur'an 3:42-49). Jesus' mother, Mary, is considered by Muslims to be the purest woman in all creation. An entire chapter of the Qur'an is named after her. It is called Surah Maryam (Qur'an, Chapter 19).
Muslims do not believe Jesus is divine. Jesus' miracles and miraculous birth emanate from the same Almighty Power that was able to bring Adam (peace be upon him) into being without a mother or a father!
In the Semitic languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic), the phrase "son of God" is a common term used-to describe pious people. In fact, this term is used over 83 times in reference to 38 different people in the Bible and thus, it is not useful to use the tsm "son of God" as an argument in favor of the divinity of Jesus (peace be upon him).
Muslims do not believe in the concept of Jesus (peace be upon him) as "God incarnate". Muslims feel that it is below Allah's Majesty and Supreme Sovereignty to believe that He appeared in human form and performed human biological functions. Likewise, Muslims hold that Allah, the All-Knowing, has no need to become "human" in order to truly understand or address human needs and suffering. His Power and Knowledge of all things is Complete and encompasses all of His Creation.
Finally, Muslims do not believe in the concept of Atonement of Sins through the shedding of Jesus' blood. The Qur'an states that when Adam and Eve sinned, they requested and received Allah's forgiveness. Thus, in Islam there is no concept of "Original Sin" to "require" atonement. Muslim believe all babies are born pure and sinless. If a human sins, then he or she may seek Allah's forgiveness directly. And He is able to directly forgive whomever He wills without the shedding of Jesus' blood.
